I recently was hired on with a company. My official offer, however, was pending a basic background check. For those of you who have never had a background check, there is no need to worry. As long as you were honest on your application for employment and your resume, you have nothing to worry about. This extra step is mainly being taken by companies to keep people honest so they are getting what they are paying you for. Additionally, a company is may be held responsible for any actions its employees take while on company time, therefore they are taking precautionary steps. Background checks are just part of the hiring process for some companies.
